When TVs Crash: Convergence Gone Bad

from the welcome-to-CES dept

PC World's Editor in Chief arrived in Las Vegas for CES and tried to check his email. When he found out he had to first get authorization via his TV (convergence!) he went through the process only to get an Internet Explorer error message on his TV. So, while we've been hearing plenty of stories about convergence leading up to CES, it pays to remember that it doesn't always work that well.

    No Subject Given

this is old news.... about 4 years ago I was at an upscale hotel in Zurich, Switzerland. This hotel had the "Interactive TV" feature, where for some ungodly sum of money, you could surf/send email/etc.

Late one night, while channel flipping, I came to the "Web" Station, and it had crashed, with a German dialog box (Windows). The *really* bad part was that the background on the screen was a mosaic of "kiddie porn" pictures, and every TV in the hotel had this until the next morning when someone finally noticed it.

    Hexadecimal crashdump on tv

A few months ago Tim Bray wrote about his crashing satelite receiver: KrashTV. He also discusses the usability problems it has when it doesn't crash.

This is what I worry about with VoIP. If everything is coming over one pipe, how do you contact the provider when something goes wrong with the pipe? People pick up the phone and expect it to work all the time, unless a wire is physically broken somewhere. I can't count the number of times my broadband connection has gone down for no reason and I had to walk through some troubleshooting steps with the support person to figure out whether it was on my end or theirs.
