Delayed SMS Messages Mean A Late Happy New Year Down Under

from the thanks-for-your-prompt-reply... dept

One thing to remember about SMS text messaging is that it's notoriously unreliable. There are plenty of stories about how a significant percentage of SMS messages get lost into the ether. Others, of course, are delayed for quite some time. Users in Australia apparently discovered this over the past couple of days when "Happy New Years" messages started arriving from friends and family in Europe. Apparently, a number of reply SMS messages sent from Europe to Australia took the... um... scenic route, and didn't make it to destination phones for five days. Part of the problem was just the surge of well wishers using SMS, while some of it was just the nature of SMS. This may be important to remember as people bring up ideas like using SMS for "early warnings" on tsunamis and other impending dangers.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
