MetroPCS Sells Spectrum To Verizon Wireless -- EV-DO In The Bay Area?

While Verizon Wireless has been aggressively rolling out their EV-DO 3G service, one spot that is noticeably absent from rollout plans has been the San Francisco Bay Area. This struck some as odd, since Silicon Valley would be an obvious early adopter area. The problem, though (which Verizon won't admit publicly, of course) is that they just don't have the spectrum to do it. That might be changing. MetroPCS, who does have the spectrum, has agreed to sell a bunch of its Bay Area spectrum to Verizon Wireless for $230 million and a nationwide roaming agreement. So, for folks in the Bay Area waiting for EV-DO from Verizon Wireless, be happy.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Did you know

Did you know if you spen Hundreds of dollars on MetroPcs phones and have to move out of the area, your phone is now a paper wieght??? Shocking, even though other companies may sell the exact same phone you are unable to get the service switched, or if the phone is over a year old they wont refund you money. Hmmm now I dont quite know how I feel about that. That and corporate wont even give out a number to make a complaint. That is just bad business in my mind, who am I right, the unknowing consumer

    There are other options

I travel between 3 MetroPCS areas... one phone. Just dial *228 and it will update your PRL and voila. MetroPCS is not for everybody. But my coworkers average cell phone bills of 400$ and I go about $150. Now with the nationwide agreement with VZW.. I may be able to drop that down even more... so I save 250.00 a month and my phone cost me $149. Do the math. I will buy my own phone Thank You. IF you have moved out of a MetroPCS service area.. you can sell your phone on Ebay. There is a very active market for used MetroPCS phones.

Gov regulations are needed so companies dont lie about quality of service. Then you cantchange service cause u have a branded phone. Like metropcs selling 6 android 3g phones yet not offer 3 g service
