Constructive Media Criticism Or Criminal Conspiracy?

from the choices,-choices dept

It's clear that not everyone in the press likes blogs. However, the whole debate over bloggers vs. journalists seems kind of silly (it's often an apples and oranges comparison anyway). Still, that doesn't mean there won't be some interesting clashes along the way. Mark Glaser's latest column for OJR explores one such clash, where the Times of India forced a media critic blogger offline by threatening him with a lawsuit, where it claimed his ongoing criticism of their publication was "a criminal conspiracy." The case isn't about bloggers vs. journalists -- but the borders of criticism and libel -- and how much fuzzier that barrier can get when you can write whatever you want.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I thought that as long as you made it perfectly clear that it was your opinion and you didn't try to pass it off as fact, then libel was not an issue.

    But I really don't know
