Cracks Showing In US Crackdown On Online Gambling

from the take-that,-feds dept

While the US federal government has made it clear that it's a priority to stomp out all online gambling (leading them to do such things as trying to ban anyone from even advertising an online casino), it looks like they may be losing ground -- even to state governments. Three state governments, in North Dakota, Illinois and Georgia are looking to pass laws that will legalize certain forms of online gambling within those states. Meanwhile, the UK, where online gambling is big business, is set to make it legal for UK-based online casinos to accept wagers for US citizens -- even if those gamblers are breaking the law back home. In other words, it looks like the US's attempt to legislate online gambling out of existence is facing more than a few problems right now.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

      Re: online gambling

I find this amusing in a lot of ways. The US (mostly in the form of corporate interest) has tried, successfully in some ways, to apply US laws to the world's use of the internet. It's interesting to see this attitude returned from both within and without the US.

    legislating morality - again?

Look at what happened last time the Feds tried to legislate morality. It resulted in Prohibition and we all know how well that worked out.
