A New Butler For Barry

from the this-one-we-really-didn't-see-coming dept

Fearing being typecast as an internet travel conglomerate, Barry Diller reminds everyone that he's not just in the travel business by buying AskJeeves for almost $2 billion. Though the deal is not yet finalized, that is certainly an expensive way to break the mold. At least Diller is buying an actual profitable business this time, as opposed to just jumping on the bandwagon (and then jumping off). Then again, AskJeeves just bought into one of the hottest startup memes last month, so in that regard, isn't Diller just jumping on the bandwagon transitively? Then again, this deal does look like more than a passing fad. Considering the focus on local search offerings from both Yahoo and Google these days, the marriage of AskJeeves with CitySearch provides a wealth of local seach content and clients mutually beneficial to both companies. With Yahoo encroaching upon more and more of Diller's businesses with Travel, Personals and 360, it looks like it's time for IAC to start on its own offensive. Update And... it's official.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
