Of Cold Fusion And Perfect DRM
from the yeah,-nice-try dept
It's funny how every year or so, some company comes out with a claim that it has created the absolute perfect copy protection system that works perfectly every time, preventing unauthorized copying, but allowing authorized playback. The latest such claim comes along with amusing boasts such as its ability to "wipe out" file sharing. Beyond the fact that most content companies (despite their claims) don't want to wipe out file sharing, there simply is no way to make a perfect copy protection system. If the content needs to be seen, listened to or read, then there will be a way to make a copy and get it on a file sharing system. It's that simple. Of course, we're dealing with industries that seem to have no problems whatsoever in exaggerating claims -- so perhaps it's normal. Next thing you know, we'll find out that these firms are working on cold fusion and perpetual motion machines.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
