Is The Internet Making Porn Less Of An Issue For Kids?
from the unintended-consequences... dept
This obviously needs a lot more research, but it appears that some are wondering if the pervasive nature of porn in society may have had the opposite effect that many anti-porn campaigners predicted. That is, the easy access to pornographic material hasn't necessarily harmed the development of children -- but has actually de-sensitized them so much that they don't care about it. There's still plenty of research going on in this area, and some of the points made in the article about kids just not caring about porn are anecdotal. However, there are some related stats that are interesting. Fewer kids are having sex than a decade ago and "teenagers now have the lowest pregnancy, birth and abortion rates in decades." Obviously, there are plenty of other variables that could have impacted those results, but it certainly raises the question as to whether or not the pervasiveness of porn has actually desensitized children to the point that it's lost some of its "mysterious" allure.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
