Local Politicians Who Can't Tax VoIP Look To Tax Mobile Service Instead

from the gotta-tax-something dept

It seems that local governments are realizing that more and more people are ditching landlines -- meaning fewer people are contributing to the various taxes those governments have been able to stack on top of your local phone bill. Since the FCC is still preventing them from taxing VoIP, local governments are looking elsewhere. Broadband Reports points out that another target for politicians is to add more taxes to your mobile phone bill, for no good reason other than they can. While a lot of the fees you see on your bill aren't government mandated, but are simply a sneaky way for providers to increase revenue, some of them really are mandated. Between price-hikes-hidden-as-fees and greedy local politicians, don't be surprised as the overall amount you're paying in "fees" continues to increase.
