The Newest Rage In Workouts? Lift That Rock.
from the sisyphean-trainers dept
From the thigh master to the ab energizer to the bowflex machine, late night television infomercials always are pushing the latest and greatest in exercise gear. Gyms these days are similarily packed with high tech treadmills, elliptical trainers, and universal weight machines. However, a gym in Albany, NY is taking a different approach: instead of fancy equipment, they prefer no frills non-mechanical workouts such as lifting rocks, rolling truck tires, and dragging anchor chains around the gym. Set in a mirrorless, concrete-floored warehouse, this workout is catching on throughout the nation. The regimen supposedly is better for developing "functional strength" that targets strengthening of the whole body rather than isolating muscle groups. I can see the infomercials now: get your own 200 pound boulder for only $29.99! If you order now, we'll throw in two tugboat chains for free! Of course, shipping and handling is extra.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

So a farm could call itself a gym, allow people to pay THE FARM for the right to exercise (work) on the farm.
What a concept. Jump on it now! There's a sucker born every minute.
