SK Telecom Buys A Record Label
SK Telecom has believe for a while in helping to jumpstart the mobile data market with its own content. The latest move, as pointed out by
MoCo News is a plan to
buy a record label to have more content for its WiBro implementation and its mobile broadcasting solution. It's an interesting move in trying to jumpstart a market, but you have to wonder if buying the entire record label puts them in a difficult position down the road of competing with potential partners (or being accused of anti-trust violations in bundling music with phone service when they hold a dominant position in the mobile market). It may work to jumpstart the market, but it could lead to problems when the market becomes more mature.
Update: In the comments below, Derek Kerton, who worked for SKT for 2.5 years, explains some of the reasons SKT might make this move.
