LA Times Surprised That People Are Jerks Online

from the so-let-me-explain-this-internet-thing-to-you... dept

It wasn't hard to predict that the LA Times' experiment with combining editorials and wikis would run into problems pretty quickly. However, early on, it sounded as if the experiment was actually going surprisingly well. That lasted just a few hours, until the expected online morons showed up and the LA Times killed the entire experiment. Of course, that leads to the inevitable questions about how the LA Times wasn't prepared to handle the inevitable trolls and vandals? In the end, though, this was probably just a savvy PR move by Michael Kinsley to point some extra attention to the LA Times website -- and, as such, it seems like the whole "experiment" was a success.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    RSVP?

On Friday, Poynter had this article where the Michael Kinsely, the editor, was saying that the experiment was a success and included this quote:

..."the ratio of assholes to good will people" is not as high as [the editor] had feared.

Good way to say "Hey, you're not trying hard enough...".
