  To go off on a tangent here, I don't think VLC needs a "serious UI upgrade." I for one appreciate the lack of "slick"-type interface popularized by OS X. Hopefully other people agree and some software vendors will too.

      I certainly see your point; but I think that a lot of designers do not really pay much attention to the desires of their audience. Admittedly, I am in the minority.
      But are you seriously suggesting that an open-source app is less popular than, say, Quicktime or Windows Media Player solely because of its UI? Come on.

  The player

  It looks like the player is only designed for in-browser usage, so questsions about VLC's ui don't really apply since it's not being used.
  Hmm it also seems to have some form specific support for mozilla, although I don't know if it is just a legacy of the VLC project.

    When will this really happen, I am looking forward to putting up some ski videos I've taken in Steamboat Springs on my site and it would be cool to use Google's new player.
