How Long Was The Huge Credit Card Data Theft Kept Secret?
from the inquiring-minds-want-to-know dept
As more news comes out about the huge security breach from Card Systems that exposed 40 million credit cards to hackers, the story raises even more questions. In an earlier post that discussed how Card Systems wasn't even supposed to have this data, we also noted that there were indications that the company knew about the breach for at least a month before revealing it. Jeremy Wagstaff has been following this case closely and is now pointing out that it looks like the breach was actually discussed many months earlier -- making him wonder who knew about the breach at what point, and how come nothing was done earlier to respond to the issue.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Great move!
It sends a message to other data-handling companies, that if the data they hold is ever compromised, they will be put out of business - no questions asked!
