The EU Wants Your Text Messages

from the put-it-in-the-circular-file dept

After making initial efforts to bring down international roaming rates earlier this month, the EU now wants to hit mobile operators' bottom line by requiring them to store call and Internet records and text messages so they can be searched by police. It's also the latest part of the EU's data-retention kick, moving forward even if the rules violate privacy laws. While mobile operators "will receive an appropriate compensation for demonstrated additional costs," its doubtful they'll swallow the additional costs without a fight, and these pragmatic concerns don't answer any of the theoretical questions that dog data retention. In any case, David Beckham had better watch out.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Shouldn't be too hard to use GPG to encrypt your SMSes, if you're sending them through e.g. apple's addressbook utility.

I like the phrase "date and time of the log in and log off of the Internet sessions": let's hope they don't discover that broadband is always on! ;)
