Do Companies Really Not Report Online Attacks?

For years, we've been hearing the FBI claim that companies don't report when they get attacked online because they're afraid of the PR nightmare associated with it. Every few months the FBI makes a public statement to that effect, and yesterday's was the latest such statement. Maybe it's time to ask questions about why attacks aren't reported? Sure, it's likely that in some cases companies are worried about the negative publicity -- especially if the attack involved customer data. However, it seems more likely that the reason companies don't report the average attack is it's just too much trouble to bother. Once most companies fend off some kind of attack, they'd rather not waste any more time on it.
