VoIP Cutoff Date Delayed... Again
from the becoming-sort-of-meaningless,-yes? dept
The whole mess with the VoIP cutoff date continues. The FCC has demanded that VoIP providers turn off service to anyone who doesn't proactively acknowledge (usually by clicking a check box) that their VoIP 911 service may not work in the same way as regular 911 service. The original cut off day was July 29th. Then it was pushed back to August 29th, and as it becomes clear that people were going to lose service, it's now been pushed back to September 28th. At this rate, it'll keep getting pushed back until the time when VoIP providers have to offer E911 service anyway. Of course, the most amusing point in all of this? If the VoIP providers have to cut you off from service, they still have to make sure the phones can dial 911.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
