Last Weeks' Virus Writers Already Arrested?

from the that-was-fast dept

The FBI is claiming that the writers of the worms that made the news last week have been arrested. One was in Morocco and one was in Turkey. If it's true that the two created the Zotob and Mytob worms then it would be a relatively fast move by officials to catch them. Of course, the viruses first came out back in March, so the timing is a bit odd. The arrests came five months later... but a week after the worms finally had a real impact by spreading quickly. It makes you wonder how much of the investigation was before this was a big deal, and how much was after.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Damage control

It just makes you wonder if they just go after the ones that cause the most headaches. They don't pursue them unless they cause major problems, infecting the big boys is a no no. Infecting the everyday layman is not worth pursuing. But you infect the major big boys then your butt is grass and they are the lawnmower. Selective pursuit.

    Re: Damage Control

Yea it really is crazy of them to chase after the criminals that have the biggest negative impact. Damn them for having priorities and not perusing cases in chronological order!
