Football Hooligans Go Nerd

from the net-fighting-man dept

Used to be the only weapons a good football hooligan needed were his fists, and maybe the occasional broken bottle or Stanley knife. Now, angry football fans are turning to the Net, like some supporters of one English club who were upset at its takeover by Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Malcom Glazer and launched a denial of service attack on his UK lawyers, as well as other companies working with him. The attacks, labelled "an annoyance" by the firm's IT guy, were easily stopped, and were arguably less successful than a Doc Marten to the head, as Glazer's takeover was successful.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Bullying as a Career?

One grade school bully kept threatening his classmates over a 15-year period, and made a career total of $300,000.

Could there be new careers for professional hooligans who know how to stir up trouble? Truck tailpipes, street sign poles, manhole lids all make fine weapons.

      Dorphus,

Your link would be great if even 1% of the TechDirt readership could read Japanese. Otherwise it's pretty useless.

        Highlights --

An elementary school bully who kept threatening his classmates over a 15-year period made a career total of $300,000. The 39-year-old was arrested for extortion, after threatening to trash the car of a 37-year-old salaryman. His victims kept giving him money, going into debt, until they could no longer afford more debts.

    Footbal Fan = Hooligan?!?!?

Don't normally reply. However the sweeping generalisation drives me up the wall. Why the heck do you have to call a group of ordinary football fans who are not looking forward to ticket price hikes to make the Glazers a bit more cash... "Hooligans"???

Ay ay ay... those fat ignorant Americans again.... :-)
