T-Mobile Lets Out The Huge Secret: They're Going 3G

from the seems-a-bit-late dept

Deutsche Telekom, who just last week said, for about the fiftieth time, that they're not going to sell T-Mobile USA is now repeating the fact that they're going to invest in a 3G network. That's sort of like if the the NY Times or the Wall Street Journal was just announcing that they're planning to launch a website. All of their competitors have either launched or will soon launch 3G networks, and T-Mobile is still trying to figure out how they're going to get the necessary spectrum. In other words, it's not news that T-Mobile is going to invest in 3G -- it's news that they still don't seem to realize just how far behind they are.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Verizon, Sprint and Cingular?

Verizon has widespread EVDO 3G service. Sprint has EVDO in many locations and are close to having it turned on in a widespread way. Cingular should launch HSDPA early next year.

T-Mobile only just launched EDGE, a step down from all of these offerings, and doesn't have the spectrum needed or the infrastructure in place to offer UMTS or HSDPA -- and it will be quite some time before they get there.

So, yeah, I'd say they're way behind.
