Government Corruption Doesn't Fit Under New Happy News Only Rules In China
from the corruption-is-too-sad dept
A few weeks ago, the Chinese government announced its new online news rules, pointing out that only beneficial news about current events could be reported on. Obviously, this means news that doesn't make those in power look bad... and what could make those in power look worse than a series of protests about government corruption. So, a discussion forum discussing exactly those types of protests is the first victim of the new rules and has been shut down. Of course, if you read the rules specifically, this would be about current events -- and you could make the argument that getting rid of corruption should be beneficial to society. It's just that the people who are deciding what's beneficial happen to be the corrupt ones, so they apparently solved that conflict of interest by shutting down the site completely.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
