Government Corruption Doesn't Fit Under New Happy News Only Rules In China

from the corruption-is-too-sad dept

A few weeks ago, the Chinese government announced its new online news rules, pointing out that only beneficial news about current events could be reported on. Obviously, this means news that doesn't make those in power look bad... and what could make those in power look worse than a series of protests about government corruption. So, a discussion forum discussing exactly those types of protests is the first victim of the new rules and has been shut down. Of course, if you read the rules specifically, this would be about current events -- and you could make the argument that getting rid of corruption should be beneficial to society. It's just that the people who are deciding what's beneficial happen to be the corrupt ones, so they apparently solved that conflict of interest by shutting down the site completely.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

As much as I can't stand living in a country run by Bush... I have zero intentions of leaving.

The problem is organization. As an individual, if we were under the same oppression we would do the same thing. Only when united are we willing to fight or even die for our beliefs. The first thing the people need to do is educate each other about the facts of their government. Only when everyone knows the truth will it be possible to organize and fight back. The Chinese government knows this and this is why they are going to such lengths to make negative stories go away.

when the chinese wanted to protest and stand up against the government, one got squished. the chinese gov has done a pretty good job keeping protestors at bay, and if a large group were to be run over, i think another country would step in to set up a "much needed democracy"... maybe the US (does china have oil?)

yeah and I'm the queen of england

Americans in general are idiots. "United we stand, divided we fall". Why do ya think the bufoons given the riens of power in america have allowed hundreds of thousands of immigrants into the country over the years? not only does it make for a much bigger tax base much quicker than relying on the proletariate to create it; and when it isn't really needed anymore all kinds of really screwed up social problems as well as their criminal side effects will do a pretty good job of destroying the fabric of unity. Think about it. people are 2 bloody scared or paranoid to even talk to their neighbors anymore let alone organize and do anything about the gross negligence and social injustices not to mention various public abominations. Anybody with a clue knows that Britain are the ones behind all the bulshit we see going on in the world today. The truth about the attack on pearl harbor that brought about Americas' involvement in world war 2 is that Germany and Japan knew the truth and they decided to join forces and tried to stop us from coming to Britains aid when Hitler was preparing to cut Britains' throat for good. That's why we "showed 'em who was boss" and blasted Japan in two spots with the bomb. Britain owns australia, india, new zealand (which is where all the bufoons plan to run off to if they haven't already) Do your homework on british history. If ya think I'm full of baloney read Thatchers' book. even she'll tell this. They don't have to hide it anymore. It's like she said. It's too big and too strong, and it's very doubtful that it can be stopped. oh, you say you want to know what the truth is that japan and Germany knew? They knew that the lie about america having won it's independence from britain was just that; a lie. But ya gotta hand it to 'em. To have pulled the wool over the eyes of americans for two hundred years by simply teaching them a lie and eliminating any touble cells that occured. I love this country. It's just too bad that we've been used as a tool by the british to do their dirty work and now every other country in the world wants to kick our ass.
