E-Stonia Gets E-Voting

from the online-it-is dept

Estonia is definitely seen as an up-and-coming area for technology these days, so it shouldn't come as a huge surprise that they're the first nation to offer nationwide online voting in an election. Still, only about 10,000 people took part -- and, of course, there are plenty of questions about the security of the system. While you have to give them credit for putting in place an awful lot of security measures to deal with the online voting, the scary part is that it's still quite difficult to figure out if there's been any kind of fraud or tampering with the system -- and no way to go back and recheck if there has been.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Estonesians

I wonder if they let Russian or Polish minorities vote?

In those kind of countries, "nationalism" generally means the same thing as racial pride.

      Re: Estonesians

Wha'? Estonia is now part of the EU (they wouldn't have been allowed to join if such discrimination existed). I think you need to carry out a bit of research before making such an ignorant comment.

Oh, and by the way it's Estonians not Estonesians!!!

        Re: Estonesians

You mean Putin didn't offer asylum to Russian minorities, offering a deal of letting them travel in sealed trains with steel plating over the windows so they would not upset Estonians? It infuriated the EU when he made this proposal. Russians who have lived there all their lives, for more than one generation, have been forcibly relocated to live next to nuclear power plants, garbage dumps, places like that, and they aren't given voting rights or citizenship.

          This is revisionist history, dorpus.

The Russian occupationist minority is still there, increasingly integrated into society. There was no forced relocation. They have the right to citizenship (albeit they have to pass a language test, many have of course) to vote.

It's not Estonia's fault the Putin treated his diaspora like crap as a PR play.
