Xbox 360 Games To Be Available Before... Xbox 360

from the the-light's-on-but-nobody's-home dept

Pirate software sites used to go on about zero-day warez -- pirated versions of material available on the day of its legitimate release. Ahead of the launch of the Xbox 360, Microsoft's giving the pirates something of a head start on some zero-day cracks by selling games a week before the console goes on sale. Perhaps the thinking is to try to generate some buzz for the console launch by getting people talking about the games, but what will that buzz be? "Boy, this one has a neat box"?

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. I guess that sounded fanboyish but I do own a psp. I am not complaining about sony. Just wanted to point the fact out.

    Hype or Money?

I would think releasing the games a week earlier might result in a double purchase.
    Timeline:
Week 1. Games released, eager gamers purchase their favorite titles.
Week 2. Console released, eager gamers purchase a console and throw in a few more games that have piqued their interest in the meanwhile.
It's like getting new school clothes. The ones you buy at the beginning of the summer (and aren't allowed to wear until school starts in the fall) aren't nearly as cool as the ones you buy right before school starts!
Even looking at the box makes a game a little less exciting.

    No Subject Given

They could be doing this because... I don't have a clue, but their marketing devision probably has a reason for it.

    Re: No Subject Given

Well, one would argue that releasing games after the 360 launch isn't ideal, so the other way around must be better!

Seriously, I think it is just another reason to do a press release to help reinforce the perception that the 360 has a big line up of games ready to go at launch. Perception is reality right?

To cut down on the amount of goods they have to move, maybe? Spread it out, rather.

    No Subject Given

Microsoft has a bad rep in my mind for not producing enough invetory to meet demand.

Over all, I am betting on marketing strategy here. Its called, "buy it now suck'a!"...

Xbox 360 games out before launch.

I personally did not pre order an xbox 360 months ago like i should have... now any where i go they say that if i preorder on now i will get one 2-6 weeks after the launch date,,, Whaterver. I'm going to camp out side of wal-mart in a little town close to where i live, hopefully i will get one. the last thing i want to worrie about is the ability to get some kind of game with it, right now i dont care what game i just want to play the xbox 360. I think the reason why m$ is doing this is because people wil not buy the system if there no games out... so buy the games a week before you you know for sure you will have somthing to do with your 360.

Sony did the same thing for the PS2 as well. Worked out well for me, because I got the games and system on different paychecks.

    That is so true!

I think the only reson they are doing this is so people preorder games and the game stores will only have to handle the systems themself the day of the relese

    Most systems do

Actually, I can't remember a system that didn't have games available for it prior to system launch. I know both the PSP and DS did. PS2 did with third party games at least. I am almost positive that both GC and Xbox both did. It just usually goes without saying. MS, Sony, and Nintendo pretty much say that it's ok with the games, but just not to do it with they system.

    Re: Most systems do

I completely agree. It's a standard tactic - why would anyone buy a console if they don't know what games it has?
