Nigeria's Latest Anti-Scam Effort? Tell People To Watch Out For Themselves

from the that's-one-way-to-deal-with-it dept

For years and years, we've been reporting on how the Nigerian government likes to make a big announcement every few months about how they're cracking down on 419 advance fee scams. Yet, somehow, the crackdowns never seem to amount to very much at all -- leading to some charges that those in positions of power really don't want to stop these scams. Now, the Nigerian government's latest "effort" is to just to help warn people about the scams, putting out statements for the folks out there who still don't seem to recognize this is a scam. Of course, considering how this story has been covered around the globe for years, you have to figure that anyone who still falls for it probably isn't paying much attention to warning notices put out by the Nigerian government.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
