You Sue Me, I Sue You

Qualcomm's responded to an antitrust complaint filed by six companies by firing back with a lawsuit of its own against one of them, alleging Nokia is infringing a dozen of its patents in GSM products. It's not the first time Qualcomm has responded this way: after being hit with an antitrust lawsuit in the US filed by Broadcom back in July (and another patent suit in May), Qualcomm turned around and sued Broadcom right back. The Broadcom and Nokia suits share six patents in common, and this sort of tit-for-tat lawsuit filing isn't uncommon in patent disputes, but the timing and target of the suit make it hard not to think this might be a little more than that, and it does little to dissuade some of the negative feelings swirling around the company.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Qualcomm's plays in GSM's back yard

Funny how the table turns when Qualcomm pulls out its GSM patents. The GSM guys thought they had that market all to themselves. Oh well, if you want to play you have to pay.
