Broadband Via Gas Lines: Invisible, Funny-Smelling

from the bandwidth-measured-in-cubic-feet dept

Back in May, we reported on a company that said it was working on delivering wireless broadband through natural gas lines. Like other supposed new broadband technologies, we tend to remain skeptical of them until paying customers are actually using it to surf the web. Six months later, gas-pipe broadband is back in the news, with the new development being that, well, there's no new development. The company behind the technology apparently still has no working products, and hasn't tried it in the field. While we'd welcome more competition in the broadband market, it sounds like it's going to be a while -- if ever -- for it to come from gas pipes.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    My new invention...

My new company is currenly working on delivering wireless broadband through good ole H2O. That's right, soon your high speed internet will be available through your very own TAP WATER.

Sure, we don't have any working products yet, but believe me, WE WILL. Just you wait. Why would I make this shit up? Seriously, we'll do it. I swear. I'd say we're about 73% done with the research and about 63% done with our finished working product.

    WATCH OUT WI-MAX AND COMCAST!!!

Broadband over sewage? I don't think I would want to have the router set up in my living room.
