We haven't written much about the struggle between the US and the UN over who got to control ICANN and set basic policy concerning how the internet functions. For the most part, both sides were making statements that were overhyped and misleading. However, for the time being, there's nothing much to worry about either way, as the two sides have come to an agreement, which is basically to leave things as they are. The US Department of Commerce will continue to oversee ICANN, who will continue to be ineffective, but now, they'll actually try to listen to foreign suggestions before proceeding to muck things up, as per usual.

    possibly the only solution worse than the status q

    would be to have ICANN run by the UN, so that instead of getting rid of influence peddling, secrecy, lack of accountability to the computing public, and possibly corruption, we would keep all that *and* have geopolitical rivalries injected into the process on an ongoing basis.

    The UN has become so corrupt as of late. Either that, or we are finally seeing the scandals emerge. I'm not comfortable with how much control the US tries to have in the World, but in the case I hope it stays managed by the US.
