Say Hello To The New Ma Bell
from the she-looks-mighty-different dept
No surprise here, but SBC is now AT&T as the deal has officially closed -- just a bit ahead of schedule. Almost all of the AT&T DNA has been jettisoned, and so we've basically got SBC with a more recognizable brand name and a lot more customers. Now for the countdown on how long it will take before they try to buy BellSouth. The two companies are already joined at the hip in many ways. The assumption is it would be a tough slog through the FTC to get approval for such a deal, but enough whispering is going on that at some point they're expected to try. The two companies have held merger talks in the past, with apparently BellSouth resisting overtures more than once -- but the pressure may get much stronger pretty soon. A recent prediction was that SBC would announce an acquisition of BellSouth within 24 hours of the deal closing with AT&T. The clock is now ticking... but I wouldn't hold my breath for this one just yet.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
