If You Can't Beat 'Em, Beat 'Em With A Patent

from the patently-obvious dept

Creative Labs has made a lot of noise over the past few years in its unsuccessful battle to unseat Apple as the top media player manufacturer -- its latest complaint being that Apple to buying up all the flash memory and creating a shortage for everybody else. Now, Creative's boss says it will "pursue aggressively" a patent it was awarded back in August that covers hierarchical menu-based user interfaces on media players, such as that of the iPod. What makes Creative CEO Sim Wong Hoo's statements a little more interesting is that they came at the launch of the company's latest media player, a color-screen model that plays video, but bears more than a passing resemblance to the video iPod. Of course, since intellectual property's so important to Mr. Sim, we're sure his company came up with the design without any influence from other companies' products. Creative wants to make its money from MP3 players. Apparently if it can't do it in the marketplace, it will try in the courts.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    In other news...

...I've patented alphabetizing, as well as storing things chronologically. I expect anyone with an organized CD collection, libraries, newspaper archives and teachers holding attendence sheets to pay up before I go xmas shopping next week.

If You Can't Beat 'Em, Beat 'Em With A Patent

Apple's iPod is grossly overrated. Why limit yourself to Apple's iTunes music store and their audio format? The whole iPod buying craze sounds a lot like the "Lemmings"...foolishly, without thinking, and in large numbers.
