TiVo Offering Up A Season Pass Of Dates?

from the how-much-do-you-trust-your-TiVo dept

You know it's getting to be Valentine's day when we have so many stories about technology and dating. The latest is that TiVo is getting into the dating game by setting up a promotion where they try to bring together new couples based on their TiVo wish lists. You fill out a questionnaire, naming what shows you have your TiVo set to record, and TiVo gives you a list of others at a party who you're likely to hit it off with -- living life like a character from the book/movie High Fidelity where a music snob points out that people should be judged not on what they are like, but what they like. Of course, matching up people romantically based on how they fill out a form? Isn't that patented by a dating site already? In fact, it's patented by the same folks who are pushing that dating site for married couples thing, eHarmony. Of course, let's all remember that TiVo, in the past, hasn't always had the best reputation for matching up the sexual interests of its subscribers.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I'm sure Eharmony wasn't the first place to match people based on how they fill out a form.

    I work for TiVo.

So I am really getting a kick out of most of these replies.

Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about.

    But trust me.... You don't.

I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you dont know what you are talking about.

This is how bad info gets passed around.

If you dont know about the topic....Dont make yourself sound like you do.

Cuz some Techdirt readers believe anything they hear.

It might be a nice marketing gimmick, but you know what they say about opposites attracting...

My wife and I have almost nothing in common when it comes to TV. Yet somehow we manage to stay married :)
