Techdirt: Rolling Right Along

from the rolling-rolling-rolling dept

Over at SiliconBeat, Matt Marshall has an altogether too kind post about some of what's going on here at Techdirt, even revealing a few things we haven't yet discussed publicly. We'll have more details on these and a few other things in the coming weeks...

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Hopefully...

Well, the thing I like about Techdirt is you guys really "get it". So, the fact that you are getting more influence is a promising thing. Keep up the good fight!

    The easy life

It's fun to snipe at established players, but can techdirt handle responsibility of its own? Or will it keep its parasitic business model of copying news from other sources? If techdirt gets it wish and the "old media" goes down, then techdirt will go down too, starved of information. I don't see techdirt making any proactive moves in that direction.

I think you've mistaken what techdirt is...I see it more as an analyst than reporter.

        Re: The easy life

Really, so it's going to "analyze" other businesses by copying what other analysts say? This is what will keep it the one-upsmanship fringe player.

            Re: The easy life

I may sound harsh, but I say this all for techdirt's sake. I have no problems with techdirt being a slashdot wannabe site, but when it pretends to be something better, it is acting just like the dot-coms that are criticized on here every day. I'd want to see techdirt take many more structural improvements before I could agree with it being something better.

"I have no problems with techdirt being a slashdot wannabe site"

Good grief let's hope not.. the last thing Techdirt needs is to cater to the whiney, teenage hax0r audience. We don't need another clone of that silliness, there's enough of it on the net already. I think Techdirt and it's community are doing just fine as it is, they're on the right track.

However, it would be nice to see more stories with a social slant, like how technology impacts communities, and stories and viewpoints that drive the engine for social understanding and change, such as the current China/Google controversy that's been in the news these days. The reporting at Techdirt for that was excellent.

A site should do much more than just report news. It should create it as well, and be a positive force for change for the better.

    'dirt growth

It's good to see a responsible site take off and grow.
TechDirt has my congratulations and sympathy.
Whether Mike & the crew survive the blessing and curse of that climbing curve on the chart will be interesting to behold.
    Onward and upward, guys.

      trolling for attention...

dorpus talks down about this site every chance he gets, yet he keeps coming back every few minutes to check if people have replied to his pointless comments... he has been as non-productive as that for at least the past 5 years now - go figure if he really has a point or is he is just trolling for attention.

Uh, thanks. But, to clarify we're a fair bit bigger than just the founding team these days (and Carlo wasn't a founder). :)

Still, thanks for the kind words.

        Re: No Subject Given

Mike didnt get the valentines he wanted to get today?

Sheesh, it took the whole TD team to create the TD of today, not just one person.

If the public sees TD as how it is represented to be, then that is just how TD represents itself as being (if it walks & quacks like a duck....)
