Spammer Gets Eight Years In Jail For Identity Theft Hack

from the and-axciom? dept

Remember Acxiom? One of those data collection companies who has made it nearly impossible to opt out of their "marketing" database, which they sell to all sorts of marketing organizations? Yes, this is the one that got hacked and had much of their data stolen, after which they fixed things so well that, yup, they got hacked again, this time by a well known spammer, who used the data to add to his list of supposedly "opt-in" spam recipients. Well, the spammer/hacker has now received eight years in jail, but Acxiom apparently gets off easy for not protecting your data very well. They must have had some sort of policy in place, as apparently that's all you need to be protected from liability on data leaks these days.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    No Subject Given

I was in charge of the S.O.X. IT compliance at my old company. After months of creative brainpower and hardwork to come up with solutions to secure our data, most of it was trashed by management in lieu of a couple of excuses.

      Good

Glad to see some of these spammers finally make it into the pen. Hope someone smashes his knuckles and makes him into a wife. Tired of these spammers creating hassles for the rest of us for now reason.
