How Long Does It Take To Get A Scam Website Shut Down?

from the quite-a-while,-apparently dept

Some "career" websites based in Canada that promised to help people get jobs in the oil industry or the government were apparently shut down recently after complaints that people paid money for information and services that were never received. That's not so interesting, as there are plenty of stories about similar sites. However, it appears that it took over five years before these sites were shut down, since the first complaint came in -- and one of them is already back online (though, it claims this time it's legit). The article expresses some skepticism about the new site, noting that one of the problems with the earlier site was that it had fake testimonials -- and the new one already has 80 testimonials, but the site owner insists they're all real this time.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    But why can't they spell...

    From the "Oily Career" website...
"PLEASE BE CAREFUL: I'm so utterly pissed off at this situation of oil industry job scams going on online that it's unbelieviable! People have even pointed fingers at us in the past mistaking us to be involved in these rediculous scams! Please rest assured hat definitely is not the case regardless of what may have been said. All we do is simply sell information."
Apparently, he's "so pissed off" he talks like the stereotypical scammer-scumbag (typos et al)... Pointing fingers at you? Why am I not surprised...
