Thank You For Calling OnStar, Your Three-To-Five Is On The Way

from the it's-for-your-own-protection dept

OnStar's focus on safety has many uses like responding to an accident, helping drivers navigate when lost, and now even protecting them from the dangers of their own drug use. While showing off his new OnStar system to his girlfriend, a Florida man turned down the volume on it so low, that he couldn't hear an operator trying to make contact with him. Because there was no response, police were sent to his car, whereupon he was arrested for having cocaine in clear sight. What's the lesson here? That you shouldn't turn down the volume on your OnStar? Perhaps, but this is a mistake that anyone could make. Maybe it's that in 2006, it's a little late to be bragging to girls about having an OnStar system. Dude, you're not exactly an early adopter anymore.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Well, it is Florida after all, but it's still even money a trailer was involved. Just as likely it's a house on legs with cranks on the windows...and a Pontiac in the front yard.

Oh, wow! If it's Florida, It MUST be red-neck. And no stereotyping THERE. Actually, the chances are much better that it's some latino gang-banger from Miami [there's some stereotyping for you, gratis]. Rednecks don't need OnStar.

Hey, I'm just bitter. Must be the Pontiac setting in the front yard [but I call it a Firebird].

Not only that, most rednecks i've known preferred beer and cigarettes for their drugs, not cocaine (they usually can't afford cocaine and usually won't steal enough to pay for it either).

    Mental picture...

I'll bet he was wearing a wife beater and had a sweet mullet with a big old beer gut and she was on her break at the local strip joint with the mandatory (in FLA)Lee Press-On nails, blue eye shadow, and a bad perm. She probably had her one-year-old baby in the car seat.

Yeah. Rednecks being able to afford cocaine? Dream on. Crystal meth, maybe.. even a little marijuana, but cocaine? I'm skeptical. Heh.

Now, more than likely, it was some suave little playboy with a trust fund out cruising the Miami strip clubbing and took his latest club catch out to his care for a little pick me up and a small chance to show off his ride.

Yes he's a beaner, no he's not a redneck. Anyone who bothered to read the news article knows this. For the lazy his name is Ralph A. Gomez and he's 38; not some kid. And for the dumb, I'm sure he's pretty well off seeing that he was driving an Escalade and he owns a condo in St. Augustine, the town he was arrested in. How do I know you ask? http://64.233.179.104/search?q=cache:Lz8S6BzCQQEJ:staugustine.com/stories/012202/hom_430179.shtm l+%22Ralph+A.+Gomez%22&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=4 BTW: it's a cached google link cause I'm too lazy to sign up. So do your fucking research before you start bashing you fucking cokeheads.

First of all I knew Ralph as much as anyone. I worked for him for seven years, I was his foreman. He was the best man in my wedding. We hung out and did things together. So please don't say that I didn't know him. I know a lot of personal things that you don't. I clearly stated that he let his success get the best of him and cose the wrong path to follow. nobody put a gun to his head to make him do what he did, therefore in my opinion he brought this on himself and payed the ultimate price. People are capable of amaking changes and I'm sure that he is on the road to recovery.

First of all- Ralph used to be a wonderful man and devoted father. He used to be a very well respected owner of a large painting company and a hell of a man. He was a recovering alcoholic with lots of money that unfortunately led him down the wrong path! His bad life choices has nothing to do with being a redneck or living in FL- so know all the facts before you make snap judgements on a situation you know nothing about. I am by NO means standing up for him-- he deserves what he got!!!
