So, Wait, Is .xxx Good Or Bad For Kids?
from the you've-got-us-all-mixed-up-now dept
It would appear that we now have two different groups of politicians, both of whom are trying to appear more "protective of our children" tossing around a political football concerning the .xxx top-level domain. Back in December, the US administration stepped in and pressured ICANN not to approve .xxx for adult sites, after conservative and religious groups protested such a red-light district online as "legitimizing" such content -- and, of course, this was bad for the cause of "protecting our children." Meanwhile, earlier this month, some US Senators started pushing a bill that would force the creation of such a domain and require all adult content sites to reside there. Again, this was put forth as a way of "protecting our children." So, for those of you who expect the government to parent your children for you, .xxx is either the best thing or the worst thing for protecting your kids. Meanwhile, ICANN, who is supposed to be making this decision on its own and who is also supposed to be separate from the US government, had planned to meet on this again this week, with approval of .xxx expected. Except... US officials have again stepped in to force ICANN to hold off, thus showing that ICANN doesn't seem to have quite the independence it claims to have. As the discussion on this continues, expect to hear over and over again the importance of protecting our children -- but who protects our children from ridiculous political battles?Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Wouldn't this help more than hurt?
Pornography is a big part of the internet, and if it is quarantined off from the rest of the net by the .xxx domain, I think that it makes it much more managable.
Pornographic websites sometimes have misleading domain names that can lead childeren to them. With the .xxx domain, you would have no question on the type of website you are visiting.

So the 'majority' of porn is going to be easy to block if we have a .xxx? Well the majority of porn is already easy to block, if you give half a damn about it anyways. That's what parental controls and filters are for.

As difficult as it seems to be for some people, I still argue that it should be up to the individual where and to what he/she wants to pull up on the computer.
I'd prefer the government fix the damn potholes on the highways I have to drive on.

I think this is best to help prevent ACCIDENTAL veiws on porn sites. If a person, kid or adult, wants to find porn, they can do it. Easily. So it may be out of the range of possibility to get ALL of the porn sites out, all you need to get out are the ones that have names close to the names of "legitimate" sites.

not all porn sites reside in the US
In fact, the internet goes well beyond the borders of the united states. I know it is hard to imagine, but it is true!
so creating .xxx and forcing sites to go there will only protect the children from AMERICAN porn

Re: I dont think they will go that far...
There are still a lot of people that feel that artistic nudes should be banned.
So, I ask again, whose standards are we going to go by?
I have no problem with moving all porn to .xxx, but there has to be a standard before it is implemented. I am all for protecting children, but there is an extent that parents need to take absolute responsibility with their offspring. I have children too, but this is not going to correct their behavior. I am the one that corrects their behavior. If I tell my children not to go to a particular site, they do not go... This is because they both respect and fear the concequences of their actions. I keep logs of every site they go to on a snort server that I have on my home network. This is how I keep track.

Protect Our Kids = Bad Idea
[ link to this | view in thread ]
Hello! Sex is part of our nature!!! Look at all other animals, they have no problems walking around nude, and they certainly have no problems having sex in the middle of a public area!
My point is, if sex offends some one, this some one will stop viewing it. This means if your kid finds a sex video disgusting, he will stop viewing it. However, if the kid is entering puberty and is starting to be interested in the whole sex enviromnent, why stop him? To "protect him"? Protect him from what? How does viewing a pornographic video damage the child? Sex has no mental damage. Sex has been proved to be good in all aspects.
If you're going to protect your child, protect him from violence, protect him from hate, protect him from abuse, protect him from propaganda, protect him from intimidation, hell!, protect him from what may actually damage him!!!

There is a simple solution to this . . . it's called parenting. Get off your couch and take the cigarrette out of your mouth and talk to your kids about things like pornography. Kids are going to do what they want, all you can do is educate them. Stop expecting the government to protect your children.

Who draws the line?
XXX by choice is dandy.
XXX by fiat is censorship.
I do art. Is is Art or Xart? Who gets to decide?
We have a nation in which we can practically show a disembowelment to children. I avoid violence in my eyes. It hardens me. It might make me think that seeing violence does not matter.
It might make me think that some other nations have a point in seeing us as not sensitive to family or moral issues. (PS I see the Xtians as a major player in bringing violence to children's minds and lives.)
I remember what "porn" was in 1950 or so. Remember the Playboy centerfolds then? Pink wasnt even thought of let alone tying up a person to make them unable to leave you when you get obnoxious.
But PISS CHRIST... now the "powers that be" would call that PORN. But HOLY ELEPHANT DUNG used in context on a picture? That was judged porn. Now a painting of Harold Washington with black skin and white bra and panties. That was removed from the halls of the Art Institute of Chicago student gallery.
BEWARE.

.xxx by force
I think it is a damn fine idea. For those people who dont choose to put a block on their PC than nothing has changed. For those that do want to filter porn it simplifes the issue.
I agree with the poster who said this can be done now but a .xxx extension is believed to be the needed catalyst to maket he message transferable.
And finally I would hope that they set a criteria like "sale of sexually explicit material" and not "breasts" otherwise this is a 1st ammendment nightmare

Doomed to Fail
Merely creating the .xxx domain will not stop business from using .com domains. In order for .xxx to have impact, all of the following conditions must be met.
1. All nations must agree on an exact and unambiguis defintion of prn, even if their citizens do not agree with this defintion.
2. All nations must agree to force businesses to publish prn only on .xxx nodes. This must be actively enforced by prn police.
3. It must be illegal for business, libraries, governments, schools, coffe shops, etc. to block .xxx domains. All blocking must be an individual user's choice. THIS IS CRTICIALLY IMPORTANT. If an organizaion in any way prevents a user from accessing those .xxx domain sites, then those sites will have a *major* incentive to disobey the law and no amount of enforcement will generate more cost than obeying the law.
Even if points 1 and 2 are done, which I doubt would ever happen, the .xxx domain is doomed to fail because governments will never, ever accept point 3. The whole intention of the government is to use .xxx to enforce their blacklisting. Government will never let the decisions be made by the individuals, so both user and web site provider will actively work to get around any blockade. In the end, the hundreds of millions of online prn consumers will prevail over the dozens of governments.

We will never be able to control people or organizations from creating this content as it is their 1st ammendment right, so we must control it by making it manageable.

.xxx
That leaves us with two choices continue allowing confusing redirects to slap it in our face. Or separate it so you know what your getting into before hand. Like it or hate it "adult" content is a very profitable business and as long as it remains that way we will see more porn not less.
As for the adult sires hosted in foreign country's debate. 90% of the Internet is hosted from servers located in the USA. its not a we're better then you thing its a we invented it thing. So enforcing the move would be rather simple. The ICANN could also wrap some sort of PKI or global account information verify you were in fact 18. Making it simpler for responsible adults to browse such content while still quarantine it from those not yet ready for it. I am a child of the net... I grew up with it... When i was 10 i was watching MTV and trading dirty pics, but by the time i was 13 i had mastered it and knew how to manipulate the net to get all the porn i wanted. In hind site this wasn't cool, and I wasn't old enough for what i encountered. Quite frankly I'm still not old enough for some of the stuff out there. We need to realise its not all BJ and dumb blonde's. There is some seriously messed up stuff out there. Stuff that makes me sick to my stomach.
I CRINGE at the thought of a kid having to face that stuff!
my 2 cents...

This would make it easy to block porn sites, thats why religious idiots don't like it. Then they can't say its too easy for kids to get to porn sites and require the dumb credit card idea. That's what they really want, POWER. The POWER to tell everyone how to live their life.

In other countries, sex is seen as part of nature, but here, noooo! Even a pair of breasts are seen as the spawn of satan. EVERY WOMAN HAS BREASTS. And its not like they'll NEVER see that in their lives. Jesus Christ, what are we, Sexophobics?
If your kids ask you about, tell them. If they don't, don't. If it's against your religion, explain it to them Children are not THAT DUMB. If you arent religious, then why is everyone so scared of it?
You dont have to change all the site's names to .xxx just because a few people can't sit down with their children and talk like human beings, let alone PARENTS.

Re:

Bottom line, you cant fix it. Its broke...
You wanna know what this is about? Its about Money, as always. That's right money. Think I am wrong? Off my rocker? Hear me out...
#1 - we cant make sites (and never will) move to the .xxx domain. There will always be porn sites on .com/org/net/us/insert_anything_that_is_purchasable_here...
#2 - Porn industry is not as big as they make it seem, but there's always room for growth. Growth that's partially hampered by the stigma of putting crap out on the .com/net whatever sites. .xxx, would just make it that much easier / available to make and market sites.
#3 - Yes .xxx would legitimize porn. Not that its not legitimate now, just that it becomes more of a cultural norm. Why just the other day I saw a porn site, and yep those were legitimate boobies. That's not what I mean. It makes porn mainstream/more acceptable and the fact is its not. Its not ethical, its not healthy, its degrading...
4# - We cant escape the fact though that there are more people addicted to porn than ever. These people need/want their fix. If you want its there, easy to find, easy to hide... There is sooo much more money to be made here. THATS why we "need" .xxx
5# - You think my space is bad now... Wait till your kid can start sallyswebcam.xxx and nobody will know. (except daddy of course, cuz he cant stop jerking off...) People get down on parents because they don't know how to parent. OK fair enough, but remember these "parents" are the illiterate generation. Just enough to know the internet is evil, but stupid enough to pay for their porn.
6# - The people who lobby for this as "protection" are morons. IF YOU WANT PORN, YOU CAN GET IT... If you spent more time changing the way culture portrays sexuality to young people you would make a difference. This is the condom approach to the internet.
- "Well we taught them in school, news, movies and music that there are no absolutes, do what feels good, you are free to behave anyway you want sexually... just use these condoms and take this morning after pills...
- Oh my look over here, this porn thing is getting out of hand! Give em more condoms! "uh, that doesn't work on computers.." Well, then filter it somehow!...
----------------
Bottom line, you cant fix it. Its broke. We are all broken.
There's only one answer to this problem. And .xxx isn't even close...

RE: Protect Our Kids = Bad Idea
Mousky just did in 1 min, what our government couldn't do in... oh never mind...
Protecting the kids is not a parents job. Helping them grow is. When will our lame a** society learn?
Same goes with violent games. Parents, if you dont want your kids to play them, dont buy it for them. And if they buy it, you're the parent do something about it!
Everyone likes to b**ch, no one takes action.

Re: we do it everywhere else .. why not the intern
The reason its top shelved is because kids go walking around video stores. You have to go looking for it, to find it. Its not hard, but our society is filled with money grubbing people who care more about income than morals, and these people own movie stores... But its just supply and demand realy.
Same thing on internet allready. You have to be a moron who begs for adware/spyware OR be LOOKING for porn, to find it. YES you do accidentaly stumble upon it, but its not realy that prevalent.
SO, internet is allready top shelved enough. Your a SAP if you think a .xxx domain will "fix" anything. The only thing this is about is ca$h...
I have said it before, and I will say it again...
If you WANT to find it you WILL.
"just assign them the .xxx & be done with it"
- You cant make .xxx work, there are too many holes in it for it to be a good filter. Its not meant to be a filter though. Its meant so people can cash in on $60 a domain for them and so we can all say, SEE!!! We did somthing about this nasty stuff!!!
- I think I will puke the fist time I see one of those google ads for a .xxx domain...

.XXX domains
1) Unlike some people think, the world is not only the US, but also other countries too (Like my one, Portugal), so the US can't enforce their laws in other countries... (This is why, it's very hard to stop piracy...)
2) Do you really think, that all websites wil move to an .xxx domain? Some may, but others may not, because their will be filtered on many places, like companies, lan houses, etc.
3) The ideia of what is porn and what isn't differs from country to country, in some countries an womam showing her face is bad, while in others people walking naked on an beach is perfectly normal...
4) If I have kids, particullary on the portuguese scenary where six year kids, actually know how to speech french, english, making money conversies, etc., I would not like them to be like nerds, or something like that, so that when left in the street they be unsafe, without knowing what's bad or good, and porn sites are one way to teach that (At least until the teaching sex in schools law is approved..)
5) Now an economical reason, many companies that produce web filters and porn content, would be out of the industry, and I don't see any government going against their wil (because their have the economical means, on their side...)
In short, this is an big affair, just like some others related to it, some countries easy approve it, while others don't. And there wil always someone out there trying to break it
[ link to this | view in thread ]
geeze...
if it ain't broken, don't fix it.
the U.S. should just nix all of the stupid things that make the majority of Americans mad and leave it be for the next 200 years.
all of this crazy stuff is unnecessary and just stresses people out. everything is going just fine right now. sure there are problems but all in all life is good, so stop tweaking stupid little things that need not be tweaked.
a kid could just get any p2p program or bittorrent host like azureus and p0rn it up anyways, so the blocking is irrelevant.
as far as making it easier to find......isnt it easy enough? how lazy can ya get, geeze! :P
