iTunes Terms Of Service Breach Fundamental Consumer Rights In Norway

from the there-are-plenty-more-where-that-came-from dept

torgeir waterhouse writes in to let us know that "The Consumer Council of Norway won support for almost all its complaints regarding iTunes Music Store. This is a great victory for the digital rights of Norwegian consumers, and iTunes have been given until the 21. of June to alter their terms of service for their operation in Norway." Looking at the specifics, it would appear this isn't so much an iTunes specific issue, but a standard non-negotiable Terms of Service and End User License Agreement issue. Most of the complaints seem to be ones that could be applied to plenty of non-negotiable clickwrap agreements. In the past, there have been questions raised about the legality of such agreements, and it's good to see at least one provider being held accountable -- but it would be better to look at these agreements as a whole, rather than cherry-picking just a high profile one.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
