Metallica Finally Realizes That Some People Like To Get Music Online
from the it's-about-time dept
For all the success of iTunes, there have been a few bands that have famously stayed out of the online music revolution -- with the Beatles being the most famous (even if they've admitted that might change soon). One that hasn't been quite so surprising was Metallica -- the poster child for bands opposed to any sort of forward progress in music distribution. The band, of course, was the first high profile music act to protest Napster, with statements that suggested the band didn't really understand what was happening. While the band did eventually experiment with some online music, it was fairly limited and the band couldn't even explain it clearly. When iTunes first came out, the band was vehemently against the service, because it would let people buy individual songs, rather than forcing them to get an entire album. If there's one thing that's been consistent through all of this, it's that the band has always wanted to define for its fans how they must enjoy the music, rather than letting the fans tell them how they want to enjoy the music. That's why it seems a bit lame for the band to position the fact that they finally are putting their songs on iTunes as something they're doing "for the fans." They make it out as if their fans are just now discovering iTunes, and then even try to blame their record label for the delay. That might be easier to buy if it weren't for their anti-fan, anti-digital position for all these years.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. Re: Losers
They were not sueing fans, they were sueing intellectual property theives. A fan would buy the cd.
They weren't just doing it for themselves. They were doing it for every band out there that doesn't do big tours and only makes a buck off of CDs.

Re: Metallica still sucks a dick
Sold out? Damn amazing what having a band worth a shit to open for you can do.
and dont give me that oh metallica is the hardest band ever they rock so hard bullshit. for a "METAL" band they suck they should be named semihardrockwithviagriaica. Should a metal band be rebellous yes. Should they be corporate french kiss asses hell no. I mean were the fuck was Metallica when Dee Snider (Twisted Sister) picked up his banner and fought against censorship. Were were they when bands like 2Live Crew were banned from being sold period. I remeber when albums were being pulled from the shelves. Oh thats right Metallica shitty lame music is not heavy enough to have been a concern, and as long as they continued to line their own coffers, They dont give a fuck about the real things. They dont care about Music for music sake, freedom of creativity, or fans. Unless your gay enough to really belive they rock and dont care about the greedy corperate dingleberry slurping way that they have approached all music distribution. Stop and think why would any band worth a fuck want to only be able to buy music that is sold in bundles and can only be played on outdated technology? Because, one they are too lazy to put out 12 songs that are all worth buying. Two they are too stupid to understand the pricing method and how they get paid royalties. Three they feel if you can play it on more than one media you should purchase a copy for each media format.on a final note most of the Metallica Fellatiors seem to think telling us that Metallica doesnt care what we think or to quote "Metallica doesnt give a shit about retards like you!" Good because I do have money. I can and do purchase albums. Which is how they make the most of thier money. But I'll be damned if I will buy any Metallica album after thier actions. I will however plan to use my internet and download a copy of the new album just to give to all of the dumbass Metallica fans that still exsist in this area. An important thought from long ago. Never bite the hand that feeds you.

Re: Metallica still sucks a dick
first of all Metallica is not like Slayer to sing the same stuff (anti crist, war, religion) over and over and over again. and you are hearing it from a Slayer fan! You said Metallica is not metal?!! hah! Tell me what is Kill'em All, Ride the lightning, And Justice for all and MASTER OF PUPPETS??! Who doesnt believe that These albums took trash metal to another level! Songs that were being influenced by all the metal bands around the world. Pantera, Dream Theatre, Opeth to name a few big one. Fuckin Dimebag played Wiplash in his concerts! Yeah You dont see that! I really like to see what you anti-metallica people listen to!
and you did not get my point!
THE WHOLE THING IS America is a capitalist country that all he thinks is getting publicize. PRs are essential in America's life style. If a lawsuit happens (Metallica vs. Napster) all the news channels and all the newspapers are gonna tell the story. that is how the news covrage should work right? Not in America. In US we go farther! we bash the motherfuckers! we create asshole out of ordinary people! we create hatred toward them! so that a teen who loved the music before and would die to see his favorite band is gonna turn against them! how power full this brainwashing process is!
Around the world, in Asia in Africa even in some part of Europe where PRs Dont mean shit and Napster is a name of a Bubble Gum! and news corps have more important stuff to do! People love these guys for the music they play and for the influence they put in their minds.
Just think about you never heard a news about napster, and when you did it was years later. You still have your albums (whether bootleg or original) and you still download music. nothing changed! would you look at metallica in a different way! My anwer would be no!
Yes I believe they changed! I believe after the Black album they changed their style! But is that a reason for me to not like them? People change and thats normal! eveyone has their ups and downs! how you react to it is more important!

Metallica hard working from clubs to frame band
Unless you make sure that your music is copy right protected, and when sold, they get a cut. Not screwed out of their fair share, they are making a profit, it's America. In the 80's CD Roms was a huge step from tapes, and illegal CD Roms of Metallica and other bands music was being made in China and across America and Europe in the millions and sold as "Real" Metallica CD Roms. Hundreds of these thieves was making millions and getting busted a lot of that money was never given to Metallica and WB.
So the band who had in the 500 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All-Time lists the first four albums at numbers 1,4, 18 and 19 should take stands when it comes to people stealing their music!
They came out with their music and just kept making some of the best metal ever produced! They was against Napster, the only reason was just so obvious.
It was a system of copying their music with out them getting any thing for making it. The kid that set up Napster could be a millionaire in the hundreds of millions with ad's and music from every group out there on his web page. I understand the music bands point of view. In fact you can compare Google.com library online idea they wanted to put books on the Internet and how some of those people, authors or publishers have filed lawsuits against it. I personally wanted to read some old as dirt books but I don't want spend hundreds of dollars on them. Just like I would have loved to download some of Metallica songs but I realize in this world nothing is free! I never did. I purchased my music from FYE and Wal-Mart.
iTunes, I would suspect that iTunes wanted way to much money compare to the artist that wrote, scored and produced the music and sang it over and over in the studio to make it perfect. The ones that toured the globe three times straight in a row, and still tour today.
So if you pay iTunes 99 cents what was the cut for the band at first? 1 cent per song? Just think if 10 million people downloaded one song. That is just pocket change for the 98 cents that iTunes was going to make off of Metallica's Music. So they wasn't being evil right wingers they was being smart music bands of the modern era, that realize how much money they was really worth and how businesses try to SCREW them out of Millions of dollars. We are not talking about your monthly rent fellows, we are talking about something worth in Billions in total. I already have their music, I don't need to purchase it again, and I try to avoid buying it twice but did with S&M, but S&M was worth it by far some of the best remixed of their greatest hits

Re: Metallica hard working from clubs to frame ban
hmm let me see we can earn 1 cent per song instead of 1 cent per album? btw Itune is also on earning a penny the remainder is eaten by the RIAA to make sure the entire company behind the label get a piece of the Artist' great work as well.

Screw them all. Screw the labels that want to bend customers over a barrel, and screw bands like Metallic that suck the label execs off while they're doing it.

metallica has always sucked
Your arguments defending metallica's suckiness are flawed:
a) Metallica fills stadiums and still have a lot of fans.
So do the Village People.
b)Metallica has 4 albums on the "top 500 metal albums of all time list"
That's shit. There aren't 500 good metal albums.
c)Metallica worked hard to get where they are.
There are better, harder working metal bands than metallica that don't have their cash. Cannibal Corpse would be an easy pick. Metallica got big because they were easily packaged as a corporate product. Have a good McMetal day.
d)James Hetfield can sing.
He has a three-note vocal range, it's pitiful.
I don't care if the rest of metallica die in a bus. The actual effect on the music world from their demise would be positive. Some other band could move up one notch on the possibility-of-success ladder. They'd sell out, too, but at least I wouldn't have to suffer the hypocritical posing of some spoiled coke addict who thinks he can be corporate and relevant. That's rule #1 of rock or any genre.
metallica is the puffy combs of rock, ask Slayer.

Re: Re: metallica has always sucked
Secondly, y'know who else sells a lot of tickets? Fifty Cent. and Shakira. And Jewel. and Anyone played on the radio. Metallica is middle schooler music, you practically have to steal back your copy of master of puppets from your little sisters collection right between a* teens and maroon five, you can't handle Cannibal Corpse because your mom makes you turn it off when you blast it through your pokemon boombox. Metallica is a dumb hick band, so get over it. They can't really play that well, Lars Ulrich is a douche, they're just the sad remnants of some long forgotten era when hair metal was badass. Real musicians keep their shirts on. Crack a Tera Melos CD and then tell me "Woah, that solo from battery is some tricky shit!"
Metallica = Hacks.

With all the time they wasted fighting napster, they should have been working to find a better way to get music to their fans instead of alienating them.
In short, its good music, but the way they acted I'm glad I never paid for any of it.

What about livemetallica.com, Mike?
Actually, Metallica has been selling mp3 (no DRM) of some of their concerts via livemetallica.com since early 2004. Seems like a big oversight not at least mentioning that fact.
They have almost 100 tracks available there now. Most of which (all?) cannot be bought on CD.
