Summer Reruns For Tech Stories?
from the haven't-we-read-this-before? dept
Summer time is when things are supposed to slow down. People go on vacation (or skip work to go to the beach) and television goes into summer reruns. Of course, we didn't realize that tech news had the opportunity to go into summer reruns as well -- but apparently it happens (hey, we're likely to be guilty of it as well sometimes). Two separate stories recently hit the wires that are likely to get some attention for their "going against conventional wisdom" storylines. First, a study claiming that women dig technology more than diamonds (and shoes). The other one is that, for all the moaning about how email is killing the Post Office, the internet is actually helping to save the USPS thanks to all that e-commerce shopping that requires physical goods to be shipped places. Both stories are interesting, and fun reads... but both have been written before. It's been nearly four years since we first spotted a chicks dig gadgets more than diamonds story, though at least this one is based on what appears to be a new (if repetitive) study. However, it was just a year ago that we wrote about the internet saving the Post Office -- and both of those pieces originated from the NY Times. There's nothing wrong with these new versions of the story, though it doesn't seem like either one adds much new from the older articles. However, if the story's been written before, is it really accurate to position either one as going "against conventional wisdom?"Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Mike is FUNNY!
The study was done by OXYGEN. Another example of how we women conduct faulty studies, and men who place themselves in a female environment in hopes of getting laid.
They all want diamonds, those liars. They don't care about the diamond cartel. They just want to impress anything, even an anonymous survey.
Not all women.

The survey about women is dumb.
The one survey, asked 1,400 women and 700 men. If this is a survey about women and tech gadgets, why are the asking men? It's a known fact that men know nothing about women. Hell, women don't know anything about women.
I liked this line a lot: The study found over the next five years women see themselves increasing their activities in six tech areas: digital cameras, cell phones, e-mail, camera phones, text messaging and instant messaging.
Oh wow, I bet a large majority of the worlds population will be increasing their activities in the same way. GG.
This is just trying to make women seem smarter in the 'tech' world then they really are.

Someone had to conduct a study to figure out women like to talk and take pictures? Was this study done by men or women?
It's lull in tech news. No big deal. When you focus on just facet of the news there will be lulls. In time flat we will b arguing over telcos, the hypocricy of big business and government, and file sharing all over again.

I'm not sure about the shipping, though... proposals seem to be one of those things better done in person. ^_^

They just don't do so until after men have created them and have been using them for awhile. Because, you know, it's men that invent things.
