iPod Factory Makes Even Apple's Treatment Of Bloggers Look Good
from the apparently dept
Over the last month or so there's been a bit of a controversy over whether or not a Chinese factory where iPods are made was something of a sweatshop. Apple investigated, and while they did find that some of the factory workers were overworked, they denied it qualified as a sweatshop. The company behind the factory, Foxconn, claimed it was vindicated, and suggested that it actually treats employees better than other factories in the area. So, with that out of the way, it seems Foxconn's decided the best course of action, rather than showing how well they treat their employees, is to destroy the lives of the reporters who originally claimed the factory had substandard working conditions. Not just sue them, but try to make their lives a living hell. They sued them for 500 times the average salary of a reporter, while also having their assets (including bank accounts) frozen. Even legal experts in China have claimed that the court's decision to freeze the assets is "absurd". The legal experts point out, first of all, that if the company has a problem with the report, they should sue the newspaper, not the reporters. Second, freezing the reporters' assets serves no reasonable purpose -- other than perhaps guaranteeing that reporters will think twice about ever reporting on substandard working conditions in China again.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Re: Good job Foxconn!
I agree that reporters shouldn't be reckless, but at the same time businesses should be much more afraid of being inhumane than reporters should be of pointing it out. Keep searching for your "truth", but know that when humanity is sacrificed for money everyone loses...even if it does allow you get your stupid-ass shit-pod for $400 instead of $800.
