TD-SCDMA Really Ready Now, They Swear
Following earlier unofficial reports, the homegrown Chinese 3G standard TD-SCDMA appears to have officially passed muster according to the country's Ministry of Information Industry. The approval comes after a reported three years of "tests" -- a statement that will do little to placate the fairly widely held belief that TD-SCDMA has had some significant problems. Of course, it's anybody's guess what this latest supposed approval means. After all, it was nearly a year ago that TD-SCDMA was declared "already mature and ready for manufacturers to move ahead with production". There's still a lot of skepticism about the technology, even from Chinese operators. So while TD-SCDMA may be good to go, don't hold your breath -- and despite what the government says, look for its use to be mandated somehow.Filed Under: 3g
