China Plans To Purify, Not 'Censor,' The Internet
from the one-way-to-do-things dept
Despite tons of evidence that China censors the internet with a huge bureaucracy of folks watching out over the internet, country officials still insist that no censorship takes place. Technically, they might be accurate, because while they don't specifically ban sites, they threaten ISPs that don't ban anything "bad" (without clearly defining what "bad" is) and then let the ISPs act as censors for them. The latest, though, is that China's Communist Party Chief is saying that the country needs to "purify" the internet, which apparently is different than censorship. Hu Jintao is apparently upset that the large and rapidly growing Chinese internet population is "often more interested in salacious pictures, bloodthirsty games and political scandal than Marxist lessons." If purifying the internet means filling it with Marxist lessons and getting rid of salacious pictures, bloodthirsty games and political scandal, he's got quite a challenge ahead of him.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Why purify that?
These questions are rhetorical, of course. It's common knowledge that the Chinese leadership is fucknuts.
