Despite Intel Investment, Speakeasy Ditches WiMAX

About a year and a half ago, the ISP Speakeasy got itself quite a bit of press when it held a press event at the top of the Space Needle in Seattle to announce the launch of its pre-WiMAX network there, which used the attraction as a location for one of its antennas. It raised a lot of fuss, but apparently the service wasn't all it was cracked up to be: it required a truck roll for decent installation, and Speakeasy didn't have the resources for it. Now, the company says it's sold the Seattle network and the rest of its wireless business to Towerstream, a wireless ISP. In 2004, Intel's VC arm put some money into Speakeasy, basically to get it to use WiMAX -- as it's done with other operators, like Clearwire and Pipex, and even other chipmakers like Beceem. Wonder if they'll be asking for a refund from Speakeasy...

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
