Acxiom Tries To Match Offline And Online Data To Better Target Spam To You
from the just-what-everyone-wants dept
Acxiom, the big provider of "marketing data" for direct marketing purposes -- who has a history of making it difficult to opt-out, while making it easy to have its databases hacked -- is apparently making a big push to link its offline profile data to your online activities as well. The company insists that it's being careful concerning private info, but this all sounds quite a bit like what DoubleClick tried to do with its purchase of data firm Abacus -- which got all sorts of negative publicity, leading the firm to shelve plans to combine the two databases. Acxiom claims that the company learned from what happened with DoubleClick and Abacus, but somehow it seems unlikely that many people will feel comfortable with such promises.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Re: blocking ads (and Acxiom)
Leroy, my recommendation would be to install the "adblock plus" plugin for Firefox, which I believe would meet your needs.
Acxiom are known spammers, so expecting them to respect anyone's privacy is silly...of course they won't, they're in the privacy-invasion business.
