Calling Scottish Business Experts: Techdirt Greenhouse Idea Workshop In Scotland, January 25th

from the join-us! dept

As some of you know, we've done a few "Techdirt Greenhouse" events over the past few years with tremendously positive feedback. These idea workshops were the basis for our Insight Community offering -- bringing together a group of smart, knowledgeable experts, as well as companies that are facing specific challenges. Participating companies present their challenges in short presentations, followed by breakout sessions where the attendees would help brainstorm solutions and ideas.

I'm heading over to the University of Edinburgh School of Informatics next week to give a series of talks on entrepreneurship, economics and business models. While there, we'll be holding the first Greenhouse of 2008 on Friday, January 25th, as a part of the Edinburgh-Stanford Link. If you're in the area and would like to attend, it's a great chance to meet with other smart folks and entrepreneurs, to network with them, to understand some of the challenges they face and to share your expertise. It's taking place at the Alba Innovation Center and all of the details are here. And, when you do attend, be sure to come over and introduce yourself!

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Hillington Park is in Glasgow, not Edinburgh!

Aha. Well, I was just going by what the folks at the University of Edinburgh told me. However, now that I look, it actually appears to be in Livingston, which is outside Edinburgh on the way to Glasgow. The Hillington Park location is different than the Alba one...

    Alba Innovation Centre

Right, Mike. The Alba Innovation Centre is in Livingston, which is just outside of Edinburgh. It is operated by the same folks who manage the Hillington Park Innovation Centre (ranked #1 in the UK by UKBI last year). Here's some more information:

    i dont understand???

If i turn up and help tell companies what their problem is then where's the profit?

surely they should be paying for advice like that?

Or do they pay techdirt who then do a youtube and keep all the cash??

At least tell me there will be free coffee?

    Free

There is free coffee and lunch as well f5k. These are startups with little cash, or postraduate students from the University of Edinburgh. This is an idea workshop designed to help each other. Techdirt is not making money from this event, nor is the Edinburgh-Stanford Link. Its an all-volunteer effort all the way around. This is free and open, kinda like a BarCamp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BarCamp except that specific issues will be worked on in groups.
