TorrentSpy Appeals Lawsuit Over MPAA Getting Access To Its Emails

from the not-done-yet dept

While TorrentSpy may have shut down and lost its copyright infringement lawsuit against the MPAA, it's still appealing a separate issue: whether the MPAA broke the law in hiring a guy to break into TorrentSpy's email server and forward emails to the MPAA. The MPAA got away with playing dumb when this issue first came up, claiming it assumed the guy they hired had legitimate access to all of the emails he was handing over -- though, that seems highly questionable.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Willful Blindness

Although DanC might disagree with me, I think this is yet another example where the legal doctrine of willful blindness should apply.

    Paid to hack??

I'll save the MPAA the hassle as being a longtime TorrentSpy user - here's my email: fuk.u@hushmail.com.

    What a waste.

Good thing I use proxies =P

    Re: Willful Blindness

Actually, it wouldn't surprise me at all if that's the case. Both the MPAA or the RIAA have shown they aren't above using questionable tactics, but the problem will be proving it in court.

The MPAA and RIAA consider themselves above the law. They do not need to follow the law, and they can do whatever they want.

We need someone high up to slap this MAFIAA around and put an end to their illegal practices. They are no different from the mob.

    ASSUME

"The MPAA got away with playing dumb when this issue first came up, claiming it assumed the guy they hired had legitimate access to all of the emails he was handing over-- You know, when I was in the Marine Corps, I learned that to 'assume' was the equivalent of "..making an ASS out of U and ME." It seems that, here, that on the face of things, the MPAA is simply full of ASSES!
