Irish ISPs Point Out They're Under No Obligation To Follow Three Strikes Policy
from the pushback-time dept
Last month, we wrote about how the recording industry association in Ireland, IRMA, was sending around vaguely threatening letters to ISPs, telling them that they had to abide by the settlement terms made by the ISP Eircom, which included a three strikes policy and, according to IRMA -- but not Eircom -- an agreement not to protest should IRMA convince the gov't that certain sites, such as The Pirate Bay, should be blocked altogether. Luckily, the folks at those ISPs recognize they're under no legal obligation to do this, and as reader eoinmonty alerts us, those ISPs have now made that clear to IRMA, sending the group a letter, saying that the legal threat implied by IRMA's original letter was spurious, and the ISPs believe they're just fine under current European law.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

It's actually 'Póg mo thóin' but your attempt was much more humorous :-)
IRMA are seeing how far they can push the ISPs before they push back. Thankfully, it wasn't too far[yet..].
Have a great Paddy's Day!!!!!!!

Yay Ireland.
Now if only the US ISPs and Microsoft would follow their lead.

Finally, some sense prevails
Also I wonder to what extent public awareness of sites like Pirate Bay has been enhanced by IRMA?
