Software Business Model: Adopt A Line Of Code
from the for-just-the-price-of-a-cup-of-coffee... dept
A few different people have sent in this story about how the developers behind Miro, an open source video watching software, are experimenting with a different sort of business model to support the development of the software: adopt a line of code. It's a cute little gimmick, but it is a creative way to get some attention and give people an additional benefit for supporting the project. They even offer a little widget that you can use to show off the line of code you adopted. I'm not sure how well this will work longterm, since it's more about the gimmick than providing some sort of scarce value, but it's still worth noting.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I'm sorry, your line of code was merged out. Try again.

Interesting
And on the the bright side, no-one need pirate it, because it's 100% FREE so no commercial tie-ins or preference for specific codecs over others.
