Have Your Say: Should Mike Speak At SXSW?

from the your-choice dept

The famed SXSW event is going through their annual process of picking speakers/panels/discussions and they decided that having me do one of my presentations on the music industry might be a good idea. However, the SXSW process involves getting the community to vote on who should speak. That process has just begun, and my talk is now listed for you to vote on. So, go and have your say in whether or not I get to speak at the event.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Have you considered having a link somewhere on techdirt of past presentations? or maybe at least, the last one given? Don't know if that would spoil the talk, but might give non-techdirt visitors who follow the links a bit more on what you'll say.

Ah, good idea. We do have a link with some of my past speaking presentations here:

Speaking of pages which could be put up; have you considered a standing page which highlights those who use "free" in their business model--and has links to outstanding examples thereof?

You could call it "Free Trophies" perhaps.

    Which Mike?

    I don't know.
    Mike Masnick? Oh, sure.
    Mike Kessler? Probably not.

Please elaborate. It's tough to tell the Mikes apart.

    Riddle me this

The SXSW is easily one of the most crowded, convoluted, unnavigable websites I've been to for some time. I didn't find any conveniently placed information on where the damn thing is. I assume the contact us is not where the conference is...

In any case, do something in Chicago and I'll get motivated.

Austin ought to be full of nonconventional music consumers for you to tease the minds of. I hope you make it here.

    I'm trying

I won't actually be at the conference, but I think you should definitely give a talk there.

However, after registering on their website, it's now been 20-30 minutes and I haven't received a confirmation notice so I can actually vote (it's not in my spam folder either!)....If it ever shows up, I'll certainly give you my vote!

    I'll vote

Does this mean I can buy one of the packages and have my lunch with you when you are in Austin?

It took about an hour for my confirmation email to show up.

Masnick at SXSW? Sure, you're probably one the best qualified. But Masnick on a Japanese Game Show? I'm there baybee, I'm there.

Nah, Mike should just send his slides, and the can run them as background against Amanda Facepalm Palmer mouthing off against record companies and middlemen, all the while preparing her Live Nation tour of the UK.

    Hmmm.

    "Have Your Say: .."
    but
    "...Should Mike Speak At SXSW?"

So I don't actually get to have my say - another rip-off.

    SXSW?

What, precisely, IS this "SXSW" thing? Unfortunately, the blog post doesn't give an explanation or summary, a link to one, or even say what the letters "SXSW" stand for.

In writing school, I was told never to use an abbreviation without expanding it at least in the first place it was used in a story, except for universally known ones like "Mr." and "Dr.". Then again, I got a D- in that course so what do I know?
