Dutch Collection Society Backs Down Slightly On Video Embeds

from the but-not-really dept

Dennis Laumen alerts us to an update on the story concerning Dutch music collection society Buma/Stemra's plan to charge bloggers for embedding YouTube videos on their site. After the story got lots of publicity, Buma appears to have backed down ever so slightly, saying that "amateur" bloggers are off the hook. But, the definition of "amateur" is basically only if you don't have any ads. Put up some Google AdSense... and suddenly you're a "pro" who has to pay up.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Nice to see we start off the week with a healthy dose of utter stupidity.

Let's take every Facebook user to court, they all have some Youtube (and similar stuff) on their "home-page" ... Aaah, how lawyers can always keep their agenda filled ...

    What's next?

I suppose after putting this in place and seeing the resulting increase in simple links to the same relevant videos, they will start demanding money for those links as well.

The important thing is to keep the legal department busy.

All other aspects of the business must be subordinated to this superior goal.

The appropriate response for bloggers to give the collection racket

I cordially invite you to go fornicate yourself with an iron stick.

If only someone could translate that into Dutch.

    Missing the point

Oh, we will still have bloggers. Programs like Google's AdSense have just taken a shot in the shorts though and Google has lots of nice lawyers to "discuss" this issue with the Dutch.

Aww, kinda sad I am in Sweden and not where they can come after me for embedding their videos in my pages, would really make me feel good to tell them to go F themselves and eat sh!t when they came with their begging bowls.
